So I Tried… Suit For Hire

Each edition of So I Tried… I will try a game that I have never played before. Will I find something new to love? Will I find something new to despise? I'll take a full half hour, no matter how bad it gets or how badly I do, to see if this is the game for me. This time, I went for Suit for Hire.

library hero 2x

Ah, what’s better than starting the year than tackling part of the giant backlog of titles I’ve accumulated over the years? Developed and published by Godmode Interactive, this game has been sitting in my Steam library since the 8th of July 2025. I found out about it when I stumbled upon a video showing its gameplay, saw that it was part of the Steam Summer Sale, and bought it. Now it’s time to actually play the dang thing.

What I thought it was

I thought it was just something to scratch that Max Payne itch that I had back when I was feeling for it. Although I only played Max Payne 3, I loved the gunplay; diving and dodging through hails of bullets while ending my enemies with a pair of dual pistols, and from the little I remember of seeing Suit For Hire (I decided not to refresh my memory), this is like its spiritual successor.

I love when developers revive a concept from great games left in the dust and give it a quick shot in the arm, such as games like Wargroove, One Step From Eden, and Ready or Not. System Shock has three in Dead Space, BioShock, and Prey (2017), and they’re all fun in their own way. We aren’t exactly getting a Max Payne game any time soon, and since the John Wick movies showed how satisfying and brutal gunplay can be, I wanna see that in videogame form again. So… let’s set the timer for 30 minutes and check it out!

What it actually is

Exactly what I expected, a very brutal and satisfying shooter that emphasises speed, proficiency, and having a plan to kill everyone you meet. A lot of the systems encourage you to play as stylishly and as fast as possible. You can only take three hits before you go down, which means you can’t just tank through fire. You can only carry one extra mag for your main gun, so you have to either pick up weapons along the way or get more bullets by executing enemies. There’s also, of course, a combo system where the more enemies you kill in a row, the better score you get at the end of the level.

I admit, I was playing on a controller, which had some aggressive auto-aim that let me headshot mercs from across the street, and I played on Amateur difficulty so I didn’t need to truly use every single tool and ability in my arsenal, but it’s still really fun clearing out an entire room of enemies without getting a single drop of blood on your suit. It genuinely did make me feel like the man you sent to kill the boogeyman.

Will I keep playing?

Heck yeah I’m gonna play Suit For Hire more! If only to actually play the game on Normal difficulty and actually feel challenged. I only played the tutorial and the first two levels, and they’re all exciting to play through. I also forgot that you could play the game from a top-down perspective or in third-person, so I might try that out later once I beat it.

30 minutes is not enough time to experience what Suit For Hire has to offer, and I’m eager to play more of this game I slept on. You shouldn’t make the same mistake I made, so pick it up if you get the chance!
